China Signals: Nuclear-Capable Bomber Flight Over Philippine EEZ Is Indeed A Signal

Description:

On Sunday, I wrote a Forbes post in which I quoted two experts interpreting China’s H-6K nuclear-capable bomber flight over Scarborough Shoal (Panatag Shoal), which is within the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ). One expert argued that the flight was strategic signalling by China and should be taken as a reminder of the threat against the U.S. — a demonstration of resolve over the 9-dash line after the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling. The other expert argued that the flight could be for domestic consumption only.

Description:

Illicit drugs are common enemy of the mankind. Fighting against all drug-related crimes is shared responsibility of all countries in the world. The Chinese government has been firm and severe in drug control and in punishing all drug criminals in accordance with laws regardless their nationalities. The Chinese government has been promoting and has carried out effective international cooperation with many countries. China fully understands that the Philippine government under the leadership of H.E. President Rodrigo Duterte has taken it as a top priority in cracking down drug-related crimes. China has expressed explicitly to the new administration China's willingness for effective cooperation in this regard, and would like to work out a specific plan of action with the Philippine side.

America Can Enforce the South China Sea Decision without Humiliating China

Description:

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague released a stinging rebuke to China in last week’s ruling on the arbitration case brought by the Philippines. Philippine presidents Benigno Aquino III and Rodrigo Duterte both risked their relations with China by initiating and, in the latter case, not acquiescing to Chinese demands that they withdraw the case. The Philippines should be strongly supported by the United States and our allies in this moment of need, including through U.S. naval enforcement of the ruling and U.S. ratification of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The curious case of Okinotori: reef, rock, or island?

Description:

The July 12 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague in favor of the Philippines’ case against China’s claim to sovereignty over large portions of the South China Sea created ripple effects that went far beyond the area involved. In denying that many of the entities claimed by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) were islands, which would entitle them to exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of 200 nautical miles from their base lines, but rocks, which are entitled to only a 12-mile exclusion zone, the tribunal also undermined the Japanese government’s claim that Okinotori is an island.

Description:

A new era has begun in the South China Sea. Things will never remain the same, even if facts on the ground will take some time to reflect new realities. China’s expansive maritime claims across the South China Sea have been nullified in unequivocal terms. Yes, China will surely go on to dismiss the verdict of an Arbitral Tribunal, constituted under the aegis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as “null and void,” “a piece of scrap paper” and a conspiracy of the West.

Description:

Chito Sta. Romana, fomer ABC News Beijing Bureau Chief, believes that the Arbitral Tribunal's ruling is both a challenge and an opportunity for the Philippines. He explained it is a challenge in the sense that Manila will have to find a way to make Beijing comply with the Tribunal's decision. For him, the opportunity lies in the new administration's signal of a less adversarial and more conciliatory approach with China.
