Description:

Filipinos and Vietnamese descended from the ancient Malays. The race also brought forth the Indonesians, Malaysians, and Bruneians. The Malays were daring seafarers. Around the first millennium they crossed the Indian Ocean in boats of 300 warriors, and conquered Madagascar off Africa. There they introduced plants and animals, like banana and carabao, and rice paddy agriculture – all nowhere found in mainland Africa. For a time the Cham region of southern Vietnam served as the capital of the Malay realm.

Vietnam has reportedly terminated a gas-drilling expedition in the contested South China Sea, following threats from Beijing, as it embeds its grip on the region by opening a cinema on an island claimed by Hanoi. Vietnamese diplomatic sources and an oil industry insider told the BBC that the Spanish-owned drilling company, Repsol, was forced to leave the area. It was confirmed this month that a major gas field is below the water with some observers surprised at Hanoi’s immediate U-turn.

Description:

More than two years ago Philippine energy officials called off drilling for oil and natural gas in a sensitive part of the South China Sea that Beijing claims as its own. The Southeast Asian country’s Department of Energy froze that ambition because the Philippines was preparing for world court arbitration with China over who has the more rightful rights to the tract of sea. The location is called Reed Bank, an 8,866 square-kilometer table mount 80 kilometers from the Philippine island of Palawan.

Description:

FORMER President Aquino’s foreign affairs secretary, Alberto del Rosario, who pushed for the international suit against China over the South China Sea disputes, is now openly linked to a US think tank and lobby group, the Washington-based Bower Group Asia. Del Rosario in May set up his pompously named “Albert del Rosario Institute for Strategic and International Studies” (ADRI) supposedly to undertake research on “issues affecting the Philippines and East Asia.” So far, it has been Del Rosario’s venue for defending Aquino and his move to pursue the arbitration case against China over the South China Sea issue and to paint China as an expansionist bully in the region.

HAIKOU, CHINA – There is a big difference between reasoning and rationalization. Reasoning is the use of facts and logic to derive a conclusion regarding a given issue. Rationalization is the use of reasoning to justify a preconceived conclusion. Many countries have rationalized their positions regarding their claims and actions in the South China Sea. Indeed there are no “innocents” — only degrees of rationalization.

Description:

Russia, we noted last month, is boxed in by the tyranny of hydrography. They really have no way to get out onto the surface of the deep blue sea that is not constrained by land, ice, or NATO. China, on the other hand, does have a long oceanic and ice-free coastline. But for similar reasons, has a bit of a problem, ocean-wise.

After taking power in June 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte quickly adjusted his country's strategy toward China, normalizing relations and warming up bilateral economic ties within a very short period of time. In just one year, the Philippines has reversed its marginalized position on the road map for China's Belt and Road initiative. From past experience, many Chinese scholars worry that Duterte's current China policy may change again and thus disapprove of spending too many strategic resources on the country.

It has been 26 years since the US military, prodded by a volcanic eruption, left Clark Air Base in the Philippines. But signs of its stay, which lasted over eight decades, remain. The site follows city planning established by Americans, complete with barn-style houses lining some roads. Still present are old barracks, the parade grounds, and a veterans’ cemetery for US and Filipino soldiers and their families.
