The “Oral History of China Studies Scholars in the Philippines” is part of an international project on China Studies, which has produced more than one hundred individual narratives from all over the world. The research team, headed by Dr. Tina S. Clemente of the Asian Center, U.P. Diliman, collaborates with the global proponent, Prof. Chih-Yu Shih of the National Taiwan University, distinguished professor of China studies, international relations and political science.

The research aims to investigate the anthropology of knowledge of China Studies in the Philippines by interviewing senior China Studies scholars and documenting their intellectual history. Through this effort, we attempt to contribute to a deeper understanding of historical and cultural contexts in characterizing the nature of China Studies in the world. The first stage of the project seeks to produce transcriptions of the oral interviews, which shall be uploaded on the project’s website, http://politics.ntu.edu.tw/RAEC/act02.php. The second stage of the project endeavors to produce articles based on the interviews that shall be published as a collection in either a special journal issue or an edited volume.

In relation to this global project, Prof. Shih, in cooperation with the Center for International China Studies (CICS) at the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS), organized an international conference, “Intellectual History of International China Studies: Communication and Conversations.” The event was held on 29-30 October 2015 in Beijing. Dr. Clemente delivered a presentation entitled, “China Studies in the Philippines: Evolution and Changes.”
